It is with great sadness that we say farewell to a great supporter of the Centre for Customs and Excise Studies (CCES), Mr Pravin Gordhan.
He first engaged with CCES some 25 years ago in his role of Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), during which time he transformed SARS into a world-class tax and customs administration. Pravin also served as Chairman of the World Customs Organization Council and in his capacity of Chairman he graciously agreed to formally open the CCES Office in Canberra.
Pravin, a political activist, was a Member of the South African Parliament from 1994, and a Member of the Executive from 2009. His portfolios in the South African Cabinet included Minister of Public Enterprises, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Pravin Gordhan was an inspirational leader. He was a kind, generous and decent man who will be sadly missed. May he rest in peace.
We extend our sincere condolences to Pravin’s family.
