Brian Hurrell joined the Centre for Customs and Excise Studies in May 2008 as Chief Operating Officer and retired from this role in 2015. He had over 40 years’ experience in the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, with the last 20 being as a member of the Senior Executive Service in both Regional and Central Office postings. His most recent appointments were as National Director (Division Head/First Assistant Secretary) of the Enforcement & Investigation Division and the Maritime Operations Support Division.
He has considerable experience in all areas of Customs and Excise management, policy, administration, and operations. His particular areas of expertise are anti-dumping, offshore enforcement including international maritime law, whole of government border coordination, implementation of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement, and, investigations and enforcement policy & practice.
Brian holds a degree of Master of Customs Administration (Charles Sturt University) and a Graduate Certificate in International Customs Law and Administration (University of Canberra)
Brian is a graduate of the Australian Army Reserve Command and Staff College and the Hong Kong Civil Service Staff College.
