In December 2012, 34 Customs Officers from the Maldives Customs Service completed the Advance certificate in Customs management which is the first year of study leading to a Diploma in Customs Management. The group commenced following the Diploma in January 2012. The Diploma has been designed and developed by the Centre for Customs and Excise Studies (CCES), University of Canberra to tailor to the needs of the Maldives Customs Service. The program has been accredited by the Maldives Accreditation Board. The diploma is a two year part time program with seven modules and a work place project which the officers have to complete as the final subject for the program.
“I am very pleased that 34 officers have completed the program. Their supervisors have indicated to me that the officers who follow the diploma program are working hard. The supervisors have also informed me that they see a marked changed in the performance of the officers. This is a very pleasing result because the Government and Customs have invested a considerable amount in the program” said Mr. Mohamed Aswan during a discussion with Associate Adjunct Professor Stephen Muller who is the program manager.
CCES is now exploring possibilities to bachelor degree in Border Management to pave the opportunity for the officers who complete the program at the end of 2013 to continue their studies and earn a degree. Initial discussion in this regard has commenced.
